The Hammer has been ordered.

Michelle Flynn-Brown, Felder Group USA rep, notified me that my K3W had arrived and was paid in full. She also noted that my order had been added to their shipping que and I would be notified (in the coming week) when the carrier collected the Hammer and at that time a tracking number would be provided. She further noted that I would be called and would be provided with an ETA date.

The Hammer is scheduled for delivery tomorrow afternoon. I'm hoping that the driver will be willing/able to get the saw into my shop. I will have to wait until he arrives before I will know more.

I'm sure I will have to rent a pallet mover to get it off of the pallet. The spec's note that this saw weighs 850 lbs. I will have to construct a very sturdy ramp to support this weight. The local United Rentals has two pallet movers, so I'm good in that respect.

I am also hoping that it arrives undamaged.

It finally arrived! And one day early to boot.

First of all, my first Thank You! goes to the ABF driver who performed some amazing 18-wheeler gymnastics getting the hammer into the shop. I'll spare you the details, but trust me when I say that this driver was amazing. And more importantly, he was not detered in the least. When he finally had it in the shop he exclaimed, "Piece of cake!". Yeah, right! He was tipped very well for his heoric feat. I felt that I was blessed to get such a great driver.

I also had the great help of my neighbor and friend Bill Nolan. Gracias, amigo!!

Introduction

I'm going to describe my experience with this table saw from assembly and set up to fire up. And, I won't be pulling any punches in so doing.

Uncrating And Inspection

The crated Hammer is seen above. It arrived without the plastic even being torn. IMO, that's amazing when you consider that its journey began in Austria. Now, the work begins.

The tools required to disassemble the crate were few: drill (with the appropriate 'star' bits) and hammer. The pine came apart relatively easily. If I recall, there were a few nails and the hammer made quick work of those. I took some care not to destroy the boards as the crate was taken apart. I am glad I did because I used the crate boards to build my sharpening station which will be described elsewhere in this website.

What pallet jack?

This is kinda funny. Now.

From all the videos I had seen on the assembly and so on about this machine, one thing that I saw over an over again was of our man 'Harry' using a pallet jack to get the Hammer off of the crate. So I bought in to that because the machine does weigh 950 lbs. This was Friday and so I though that once I had the crate sufficiently disassembled I would just go down to the rental place on Saturday grab the pallet jack, unload the machine and return the pallet jack. Simple. Save for one thing I was not aware of: The rental place was closed on Saturdays. Double darn.

So, okay, lets come up with Plan B. Plan B, as it turned out, was so ridiculously simple to be embarrassing. I had all the 'tools' I needed right in front of me.

I knew that if I could get the mobilty kit (wheels, to those of you less enlightened than us Hammerites) assembled on the machine, then all I would have to do is use the lifting bar and roll it off the pallet. So, to get the wheels on I utilized one of the crate 2x4's as a fulcrum. I tested this out and the machine was lifted up quite easily.

Simple. But, I still had a problem: Because I work alone, how was I going to keep pressure on the fulcrum while I slipped boards under the machine to keep it up safely? Good question.

Lucky for me, I just happened to have a set of 25lb barbell weights laying around. I placed one of those at the end of my fulcrum and Voila!, the machine was up just high enough for me to get some boards under it.

Once I had the wheels on, I rigged up an off-ramp from a sheet of construction 3/4-inch plywood and I was good to go.
